Podcasting Transcription - Things To Consider When Recording Podcasts For Eventual Transcription

Written By:  on February 8, 2010 6 Comments

It is important that the final edited podcast excellent broadcast quality, or your audience will be quickly lose patience and stop listening, which is on course to win all future audience you are trying to impact. Against this backdrop, the host environment, "managed" more than normal, that your listeners hear do to fight for your podcast. Digital Recorder a far superior sound quality of the produce, when used with an external microphone connected in a quietEnvironment. However, there are a few guidelines that may be useful to consider before, during and after your podcast is to win, what made you maximize your recording, cut on transcription costs and make the task much easier typist!

A variety of podcasts can also be lessons, audio tours are transcribed by museums, oral history interviews, news updates, tour guides, magazines, radio programs, political broadcasts, sermons, TV CommentsNewspapers, health leaders and business meetings. In IB Transcription Services, we have a wealth of experience in what works and what does not work if the implementation and recording podcasts. These guidelines will be in Dos and Don'ts for facilitating consultation and further technical recording tips are divided, as in the context of a particular podcast transcription questions.

Above all things that we DO TO …

Preparation is the key - think about the structure and format of thePodcast. Break it into logical areas and make notes or questions for each topic. Practice your questions aloud to gain a realistic idea of how long they take too. Do not cut all your verbal "quirks" or it will sound out of wood, but it's a good idea to be aware of how many 'ers' ums''you know, "etc. They tend to interject, as the longer to last until edit later.

Think carefully about the recording location. On-site interviews can feeling in your podcastbut try and look at the acoustics of where you'll be shot. A big empty space with high ceilings create significant echoes that can interfere with the broadcast quality of the finished recordings. If you can, records in a quiet, indoor environment.

Ask the participants - some people have experienced respondents, but some are understandably nervous recorded, starting perhaps for the first time. Try to calm them before you start recording, and short setthem on the issues and questions that will be happy to meet. If you are recording at their site, ask them to try and minimize background noise. You may have to spend some time to ask upon arrival, for radios, computers or televisions are switched off and closed the doors.

Make sure you run over a few basic techniques, Microphone - how is your subjects' behavior is as important as the recording environment or the equipment that you use. If you can not record too leanclose to the microphone and speak too loudly.

It may be necessary for a license of the respondent agrees to cling to. Although the possibility of willingness to participate in a podcast, they will probably be aware, it will be recorded and broadcast on the Internet! As a matter of courtesy, it might mention that you intend for the podcast to get transcribed. If you are using commercial music safe in the final version that you have the necessary licenses.

TurnMobile phone - text messages or voice mails to send a radio frequency that the human ear can not hear, but your recording equipment will pick it up, and the resulting vibrations are drown out whatever is being said at the time. Turning phone on "silent" or vibrate "mode is not enough - they must be eliminated.

Make sure you can all hear - if at all speakers have soft voices murmur, or they will not be picked up by the recorder, but sophisticatedcould be. Always acknowledge, not the people, she speaks softly - we rarely hear "our own voices.

While attempting the shots - and respond to pause for a few seconds between the individual and the next question, or if you go to another topic. If you make a mistake, simply stop and start again. This is a difficult technique to master, but it will make it much easier at a later processing.

Companies during the recording. When respondents go on a tangent to start, you may have topause and control the conversation back on track later, even if these bits can be cut out still. If you have multiple respondents, they can talk about each other if they are animated. Maybe they need to remember to speak individually or repeat what they have just said, you can capture a clear recording of each of their contributions.

In the clarification - if the respondent tells you something, be it a photo or document, it would be a good idea to say whatIT is for the recording. You may recall what "is" at the time but you will later, when it comes to the analysis of the transcript? And if they only nod or shake their heads, either ask them to say yes or no, or confirm verbally what they have done.

Record on a digital file - not to keep stopping and starting the recorder. Make your recording as a large file. It is easier to edit and add not from one file into pieces of small files together, the final form of processedVersion.

Test your digital recorder - record check something before, there are no technical problems with your equipment. If you are sure your recorder does not plug into the network and rely on batteries that you have a spare set with you, or a battery charger and take spare memory cards, if necessary.

Try out the volume - with different volumes and microphone distances to determine what will work. Use a Check headphones, the recording levels. What you hear throughthe headphones is a true picture of what the transcriber heard and your audience. If it is too weak, the microphone (s) needs to be repositioned under certain circumstances. Most digital recorder sets the recording automatically, although based on some, you can change this setting, may be useful to change if you have a speaker with a quiet voice. If you have multiple speakers, you should adjust the microphone levels to ensure the sound check for all is equal in volume.

Use an externalMicrophone - most built-in microphones are of poor quality with limited control over the volume, and this may apply to digital recorders. Use a good quality external microphone. Lapel microphones pick the voices very clearly, but can also pick up the rustling of clothes. Noise-canceling microphones are ideal for a reduction on the background ambient noise. For many speakers, we recommend a microphone for every 1 to 2 people with a desktop stand for each individual microphone. If each hand, holding her microphone, it is too loud. For multiple microphones, mixers, you will need to connect all but one microphone to the recorder.

Keep your headphones on while recording. This allows you to adjust the volume and the interview progresses Monitor / discussion and adjust the values accordingly. Please make sure that the headphones are plugged into the recorder not the mixer - the latter will not give you an accurate representation of the actual> Recording quality. If that sounds too much like "multi-tasking, you have to ask a colleague to monitor the noise level, while you ask the questions!

Editing - You will hear the entire recording on areas you wish to keep that process which, to be identified. At this point you can edit from repetitions, pauses or linguistic habits or quirks that can not attempt, however, too much like wood and then edit an unnatural sound. Make sure you save this edited version as a new file, instead ofOverwriting the original.

Things you should avoid …

Do not record in a noisy environment, if it can be avoided. Background noise is often intrusive on recordings than we realize at the time. Votes can easily be swamped by extraneous noise, especially when people talked quietly. Some podcasts may be a certain level of background noise are aware included to indicate that your interview has been recorded on the spot - just try to strike a balance between too much"Background Color" and audibility of the interview!

The rest fall under the prohibitions really common sense principles which are common shooting situations and applications relate primarily to the recording environment itself, but the day may be hot, the windows should be closed, or the noise from traffic, road works or aircraft may interfere with your reception. Try not to sit near noisy machinery such as air conditioners or computers, or dishes in the vicinity ofMicrophone. It is tempting to have a refreshment of the respondents and these have on the table, where sits the recorder as well. If you do so, the clatter of cups, the loudest noise on the recording. Also try to avoid, shuffling papers or writing, in the vicinity of the microphone, if you can avoid it.

In an interview conversational manner, it may be tempting to interject comments during the interview. In normal conversation, we tend to say: "yeah" or "right" or "okay" on a regularProvide a basis to only if the other person that we really listening. It can be difficult, but try and break this habit because your heckling can drown what the interviewee says, and this will be impossible to edit later.

We feel sure that if you follow before the Council, the final podcast recording will be heard clearly, they are listening a joy to transcribe and simple.
